The following entries are from the 2010 Hamilton National System Award, 2010.

This was a very rewarding activity that amateurs from around the country participated in.... well done to all who took part in this years award.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Always an interesting question during awards like this.... What Branch area am I in??

Well, the following may help in this area.

      In your browser open http://maps.google.com
      In the search box enter
      http://www.quicktrip.co.nz/nibranches.kml
It may take a few seconds to load but the maps will change to NZ with
markers for the branches and the blue lines represent the "edges" of the
branch territory. This is worked out by calculating for each point on the
map what is the closest branch to find the owner.
Zoom in and you can get a lot of details.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

This years award is a two part challenge.
One part is to make contacts with another operator in another branch area or work others from your location.

Only one contact is required and there is no bonus for multi contacts, but multi contacts from your location will help others.
It does not matter where you live or what NZART Branch you are a member of... your current location at the time of the contact is the important part. You give out the branch number that covers your current location, your callsign and the time of the contact for both of your logs.
Some operators are only giving out their branch numbers ... NOT collecting them so listen and dont waste time offering numbers that are not wanted.

The other part of the award is contacts from other or making contact with others from catagory one Historic Places Trust listings.
The Historic Places Trust register can be searched at http://www.historic.org.nz/ and click on Register at the top of their page.

Click on this link and you will open a page with reference to the National System Award on the Historic Places Trust site.

When operating this award we should all remember that someone is on the side of the road giving out numbers and many may be waiting their turn to make a contact so..... BE QUICK... listen and record the number at the very least... you can look up the name of the location from the register shown above.

Alan, ZL4ACG sent the following...
It is a long haul down here to operate on the National System as the nearest repeater is located at Mt Stuart west of Balclutha/Milton 130 kms (Google Maps Distance Finder) from Invercargill and my QTH. The distance was even greater when I gave the Ringway Stables Historic site from near Otautau in Western Southland .. possibly in the order of 150kms. This would I imagine account for the quality of my signal at times .... both receive and transmit.

Edendale Homestead Complex Register Number 7704
This site is near the Edendale Dairy factory aprox 30 kms east of Invercargill on SH 1. The house itself was a short distance behind my vehicle buried deep in native bush. This location was the drive way entrance to the house. The signal path was extremely narrow as a few degrees either side and I lost the repeater on Mount Stuart 434.850Mhz.

Kelvin Hotel roof top operation
Taken from top of Kelvin Hotel, Invercargill. Branch 37 Southland members working the National System Award 2010. A ball of fun but beset by interference from other radio equipment and poor propagation particulary on Sunday 17 January. We struggled to make Mount Stuart and in fact gave it away eventually. Hope you all enjoyed the past few days of my tripping around in the Sth Otago, Dunedin and Nth Otago as much as I did. It was an immense experience and very rewarding for myself personally having lived in both Dunedin and Oamaru. Unfortunately I was obliged to return to Invercargill late on Saturday evening for family reasons and didn't even turn the radio on on Sunday.

Some rough statistics.
1/. My log has grown from 313 to 1013 contacts. I came home with 27 PDF log sheets(from Branch 12 website)
2/. All the Historic places in the Balclutha region have been logged .. except one
3/. Out of 81 Historic places in Dunedin City 61 have been logged .. 20 remain
4/. Three from 3 Historic Places in the Mosgiel area have been logged
5/. All 25 Historic Places in Oamaru have been logged.

With regard 3 above I am giving some consideration of making a day trip to Dunedin next weekend to log the final 20 sites. This would depend on a number of factors but mostly being interest from award participants. Perhaps you could offer your opinions here??

Attached is a couple of photographs I took in my travels(more to follow when I sort). This fellow was outside the one and only Historic Place at Duntroon in the Waitaiki Valley. I reckon the poor bloke should be given a hand held !! Wonder if any clever computer person could arrange that ??

Kind regards, 73's

Strachan's Cave passage fro the 2nd room
This was really worth the trip to find #7308 Strachan's Cave, we overshot it by about 2 kilometers as there was no signage to point it out, (probably a wise thing as it could easily be vandalized) but asking a friendly lady in a paddock pointed us to the right place! As you will see from the photos included, it is hard to see from the road and it is not very big inside. The only room we could stand up in was the second room, the rest had low ceilings and the last passage was very narrow. A great find!!!

Just found your site - Its awesome to see some pics from the national system award, there are some great sites to visit. Once I saw the pics I thought I would take my camera out with me and take a few pics at these locations while giving out some points to people also!
I was very impressed with Alan ZL4ACG's setup which allows him to give out points for places that might otherwise be inaccessable from the National system! I was hoping for a few offroad historic places to visit in Wellington (As you can tell by the vehicle...) but they all seem to be in major, easily accessable places..Oh well, still fun :)
